Fencing...
Fencing to many is like a dirty word and people would rather take a beating than deal with the issue. Fencing is probably the most important issue to deal with when someone buys a horse, without a doubt it can be the most dangerous thing your horse will encounter. However it is the very last thing that many want to deal with or consider. It is safe to say that no expense will be spared when it comes to animal health, feed, hoof care, tack, transportation and the list goes on, but how often does one bring a horse home and put it in an unsafe envirornment surrounded by strange horses and barbwire and the next trip is to the vet. Again, it is safe to say that it occurs more often than not. Another factor that comes to mind is when people have a vision and dream of how they want the new fence to look, they call a contractor first without researching what is best for the animal. This dream fence in many cases isn't suited for the horse or the wildlife that roam the area. One should understand that contractors are in the business of supplying labor, not expertise in most cases and just because they build fence doesn't mean they have the capability or desire to build what you are asking them to perform. Take for instance a doctor, are they all capable of performing brain surgery? No, only a very few are and the same is true of the fence contractor, they may be great at barbwire, rail or such, but never have installed a correctly designed Power Fence. This is a recipe for disaster in many cases and references need to be supplied.
My final point is that research is inexpensive compared to the material and installation costs of an improper fence design. Take the time to research and ask questions.
